Local man's first published book features 15 years of poems

Having his first book published “doesn't seem real yet,” Jeremy Amick said.
“Metaphysics and Coffee” was published last month by PublishAmerica.
When he began reading and writing poetry, he knew he wanted to be published.
Although he has an additional book of poetry he is working on, Amick has a fictional novel in the works.
But he prefers the less restrictive poetry, “where there are no rules.”
Amick's poems have been in progress for more than 15 years.
“I'm constantly writing new and revising old,” Amick said. “A lot of my favorites are in this one and the second.”
Some were inspired by a moment's event or perspective while others are years in the development.
The “metaphysics” part, Amick drew from the television series “Northern Exposure” where the radio talk show host Chris would discuss the concept - basically how people view their experiences.
“I love coffee and it gets me going like metaphysics does,” Amick said.
Some of his poetry reflects on days gone by like “Viking Warriors,” “Scottish Castle,” and “Epistle of Capt. Clark.”
Other poems are darker in viewpoint or everyday-life living.
“(Some readers) may not identify with it, I just hope they enjoy reading it,” Amick said.

Jefferson City book signings will be held from noon-2 p.m. April 8 at Hastings and from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. April 19 at Downtown Book & Toy.
“The poems do not jive with one another (in the book) because they were written at different stage of my life,” Amick said. “But you can see the transition's in there.
“I hope readers identify with it.”
