Margherita's Shoes
Karin Kavelin Jones
Margherita’s Shoes is the story of a small wine-making village in the northwest of Italy. This is where people have preserved that which knowledge takes away and continue to live in the same manner as their forebears. Rich in a heritage where miracles and lore keep close company, they pass on old wisdom, as they recall it, across the flow of a hundred years. Margherita’s Shoes is the story of the two hundred year old abandoned farmhouse Giorgio and Karin bought, where they came to live, make wine, and start a life together. Part One talks about the almost impossible dreams they had for the farm and their first year together. It shows how they learned to adjust to the obstacles they continually encountered, and to one another. Giorgio grew up dirt-poor in a war zone of Italy during the Second World War. Karin is from the Rolex suburbs of Beverly Hills, California. Part Two was written after all their dreams had been realized. It looks back over the decade. It was a time of coming to terms with love and loving, which often meant compromising – and then not thinking about it too much.
