"DOC": Husband, Father, WWII
Suzy Sholty
With the fast-paced life we lead now, it was the author’s goal to recapture a time when family was the most important to everyone. She also wanted to capture, with quotes from the many letters her dad wrote to her mother about his experience in Europe during World War II, the undying love that he had for his wife. Her parents were truly remarkable people who had more than enough love to raise their adopted twins and set them on the right path in life. The author has written a beautiful tribute to the her father and mother. “DOC” is a feel-good story that is equal parts biography, autobiography, travelogue and love story sure to make you laugh and cry all in the same paragraph.

"I am Black, Mom!"
Sarah Lucas
This book is a narrative of events that have taken place from the time my son joined the army in the fall of 2003 to his incarceration in military prison. “I am black, Mom!” is the answer my son gave me when I asked him what had gone wrong at his court marshal. I have told the story based on information I gathered from my son, his lawyer, court transcripts and various government personnel and peace organizations. I am hoping it will be of value to financially challenged families who might see the military as the only way to find a job.

I have attempted to shed some light on our nation’s most productive and ever burgeoning industries, namely defense and prison. While we crusade for democracy overseas, who is crusading for the diminishing middle-class at home?

On June 22, 2005, my beloved son was sentenced to 13 months in military prison at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Two requests for clemency were denied, and he has been warned that it will be at least a year before he can appeal his case. His first clemency request with the Fort Stewart Commander General was expectedly denied and his second clemency request to the Fort Sill brass was also denied in early January. It is obvious the military wants him to serve the full sentence. As a mother of two black sons, I am compelled to tell his story if only to alert and spare some family the pain we are experiencing.

"Just Doing Our Job…" Real Stories from Iraq
Wendy Kay VanHatten
“Just Doing Our Job…” are more than just words to Sgt. Jim VanHatten, Cpt. Thomas Bessler, and CPT Joel Morgan. Those words were their way of life for over a year in Iraq.

Our son, Sgt. VanHatten, served with the 1st Armored Division, U.S. Army. This human interest story is an account of that time spent in Iraq. Sgt. VanHatten, Cpt. Bessler, and Cpt. Morgan were all gracious enough to answer my many questions.

Many things come through loud and clear, over and over again—they are proud of the work they accomplished in a hostile environment, they understand what it is to pay the ultimate price for freedom, and they all have a “whatever it takes” attitude to get the job done.

I’m proud of all who served, especially these men.

"Perfect" Size, The: An Eating Disordered Tale of Winning the Anorexic War One Battle at a Time
Marian Rae Fortier
“Marian’s life circumstances led her on a journey that resulted in many complexes that she has had to endure, including both an eating disorder and body dysphormic disorder. Despite her many misfortunes, her style of writing compels us to keep reading. Her book truly is a page turner. Marian has worked with diligence through the years on a daily basis to overcome what has plagued her mind. Through her story she hopes to inspire others with eating disorders and their loved ones, and bring them a sense of hope to counter the dark cloud that lingers over an eating-disordered person.”

"Real Life" Bible, A
Leon Segers Jr.
A biography of sorts about life, calling this a “mere book” is too puny for what it surveys. This is an assessment of life as a collection of words. Although it has to be called “book” to validate comprehension, if placed in front of a mirror, it would vicariously show a reflection of life’s journey.

To read this life biography is like reading one’s own diary. Though it will be perceived by some as my opinion, it’s actually life’s opinion…a real life formula. And like all formulas, none exist without proper dosage. For many this will be a wake-up call for those who have questions that haven’t been answered honestly. Life can exist without this book, but this book exists because of life. After reading it, many will feel a sense of déjà vu. But whether one reads it or not, we all have, and will, live its philosophies.

...And People Thought I Didn't Know
Colleen Mitrano
This memoir is a story about a young woman and her family as they struggle to regain their life. It takes place over the course of eight years in which the family goes through many ups and downs. It shows how a regular middle-class family can go from having it all to having nothing at all. It is all told through the eyes of the oldest daughter, who knew more than anyone gave her credit for. The story shows the family’s worst moments, when they lived in the homeless shelter, and their best moments, when they finally end up living in their own home.

…at least we didn't have worms
Dan D. Anderson
I was born and raised in south central Kansas, getting my remedial education in the small town of Sedgwick. I had four sisters and one brother. The stories told in the book are true stories, and have been told in the family for years. I left Sedgwick after graduating, migrating to Oklahoma, California, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, North Carolina, and finally settling in Missouri, in the small community of Rader, some thirty-five miles from Springfield. My work has always been in engineering, and my education for this field was from the school of “hard knocks.” My life and childhood gave me the best education and experience for my field, as common sense had to be the heart of it all. Although while reading my book, you will wonder how much common sense I really had. I am now pushing sixty years old, and find that the era I grew up in was an innocent time, and the adventures I had were the foundation of my learning and integrity. I have five children, and six grandchildren. I am still working as I now have a personal business, which takes much of my time. The story here was written over a period of three years. I am ever indebted to my family for urging me to follow through with this book.
