Our Book of the Month Is...

Woody

In rural Tennessee of the 1920's and 1930's, alcohol defines the man. An ordeal, brought about by false accusations, forces Woody into adulthood at the age of twelve.

Woody enters his new life with a fierce determination to prove himself honest. Just when his life seems to have become all that he wants it to be, Woody's world again crumbles around him because of a false accusation. Defeated and disheartened, Woody begins a journey down the one pathway he wanted most to avoid.

In time he learns that it will take more than his own strength and determination to face the difficulties he encounters. Only God can show him what defines a man.

Reviews
"Woody" is an intriguing story about real life in the rural South. The book is filled with stories that make you want to laugh and cry right along with its characters. It is full of stories every good Southerner can relate to and enjoy. Its characters are well developed, while moving quickly enough to keep the attention of even the not-so-avid reader! Overall, it is a wholesome enjoyable book that will have its readers awaiting the sequel. - Bethany

Woody, the tale of a farmboy in rural Tennessee, frames a discovery path breaking from ancestral heritage. It is a well developed journey of crossing thresholds from earliest puberty to desired manhood. Woody's first association with his genetic disposition to alcoholism is portrayed with great effectiveness. Sandra McGarrity vividly captures cultural traditions passed through families. Though Woody reaches Christian conversion the experiences are depicted mildly with no overbearing spirit. Woody is a likable and unsophisticated story and is easy reading for a good getaway. - Stephanie
