What do you mean by "official release date?"
The process of releasing a title can be a little confusing. Please allow me to break down the process to make it clearer.

Once the Cover Design has been finalized, we send your book's marketing information to RR Bowker's Books In Print, Baker & Taylor, The Brodart Companyand through our printer in the United Kingdom to wholesalers in all main markets in Europe where our books are made available to more than 200 million European readers. We also list your book on our website.

While your book's listing on our website goes "live" immediately, the various retailers we submit information to may take longer to list all of your book's information. Typically, the last items they list on their sites are a book's cover image and description.

The Official Release Date we have provided you is the date by which your book's information should be complete at all outlets and thus, fully orderable.

It's been X number of days/weeks,
and I haven't received my book order.
Can you tell me what's going on?
Please allow 4-6 weeks from the date of the order for delivery of all orders.

If you have not received your order within six weeks, please contact us with the name of the person placing the order, the address to which the book(s) was/were to be shipped, the approximate date of the order, and, if you know it, the order number.

What steps does my book take in production?
Once your manuscript is accepted by our Acquisitions department, and your signed contract is returned, our Pre-Production department will contact you via e-mail. They will send you an Author Questionnaire and all the instructions you need to submit the materials we need to produce your book.

When we have received all required materials, your manuscript will enter the Design Department and actual production will begin on your book. A senior editor will evaluate the book for any legal concerns or if permissions are needed. We will contact you should there be any. All books will be assigned to a designer who will format the layout of the text according to industry standards. Once completed, the designer will create and format the cover image of your book. Both the text proofs and cover of your book will then be emailed to you. As outlined in the contract, you will have 48 hours to review your proofs to notify us of any publisher errors you find. Once your manuscript has cleared the review period, your manuscript will be final, and no more changes will be made.

Once the book review process has ended, your book will be sent to the printers and released to the industry. Approximately 6-8 weeks later, your book will be officially released to the industry.

This entire process can take as little as a few weeks, but most often, publication takes six to eight months.

Is my book returnable?
PublishAmerica experiments on and off with making books returnable for bookstores that order through a wholesaler. In the present economic climate publishers must play it conservatively. To find out the returnability status of your particular book, please contact us.

Does PublishAmerica provide complimentary review copies?
Can bookstores receive them?
PublishAmerica provides complimentary review copies to legitimate media reviewers who submit their request in writing. As per contract, this is done at our discretion. Please have any potential reviewer e-mail support@publishamerica.com or fax 301-631-9073 with his or her request. If you have any e-mail correspondence with a reviewer, you may also forward that to the above e-mail address.

PublishAmerica is unable to provide review copies to retailers at this time, as they are able to attain copies through numerous wholesalers, distributors, and directly from PublishAmerica at generous retailer discounts.

Please inform any retailers interested in purchasing copies that they may do so by calling us at 301-228-3853.

When am I getting my royalty check?
Per your contract, royalty checks and statements are issued in February and August. The February statement will reflect sales from August 1 to January 31, and the August statement reflects sales from February 1 to July 31.

You will not receive royalties on any purchases that you make yourself, as stated in paragraph 5 of your contract, unless we are running a special that explicitly states otherwise.

Also, the statements will only show sales from that royalty period for which we have been paid. Some retailers and distributors have a grace period of 30, 60, or even 90 days. Any sales not shown on one statement should certainly be included on the next.

Royalties are calculated from the sold price of the book, or the price that PublishAmerica is paid. For example, if a customer buys your book from our website for $16.95, you will receive your percentage of that amount. If a retailer purchases that same book from us at a 40% discount off of the retail price ($11.97) and sells that book for $19.95, you will receive royalties from $11.97.
